2018 Block 7 Syrah Santa Ynez Valley

We craft our Block 7 Syrah in the style of Côte-Rôtie from the Northern Rhone (albeit with a healthy dose of California sunshine). Distinctive in its aromatics, this wine evolves in the glass with initial notes of crushed boysenberries and star anise transitioning to hints of dark tamari and black licorice. The refined tannin structure evokes river silt with aromas of earthy, dried live oak leaf and blueberry compote on the palate, contrasting the mocha accent from the oak.

Block 7 is perched at the top of the Estate where the east/west row orientation and meager Chamise Shaly loam soils are perfectly suited to this style of Syrah. The 2018 growing season in Santa Barbara County started very slowly with a very cool spring resulting in harvest dates two weeks later than the previous year. These cooler temperatures reduced our yield per vine, resulting in berries with highly concentrated color and flavor.
