2018 Block 5 Syrah Santa Ynez Valley

Our Block 5 Syrah is an unrestrained red wine that evolves with every inhale. A beautiful ripe raspberry jam color shows in the glass. Notes of violet and slate reveal a touch of earthiness on the nose. A second pass gives you aromas of orange blossom and dark brown sugar. Layer after layer of foraged briar berries entwine with aromas of fresh-split wood and orange peel. Edgy tannins lead to an energetic finish with dusts of Belgian cocoa. Our winemaker Jane Dunkley suggests pairing with brisket, short ribs or prime rib au jus.

Wine Tips:

Vintage 2018 speaks to the true terroir of Block 5, a south-facing hillside where intense sunshine and cool evening temperatures create perfect conditions for Syrah. We harvested 97% of this Syrah from Block 5 of our estate and 3% Petite Sirah from Block 3 and 11 of our estate vineyard to add extra dimension to the wine. The 2018 vintage experienced budbreak as usual before cool spring temperatures delayed harvest for two weeks, resulting in a longer hang time to build more intense flavor. Fruit from this vintage shows healthy acidity, intense flavor and spectacular aromatics. We hand-harvested Block 5 in late October. After pressing, the wine was racked to French and American oak barrels from select coopers to achieve complex flavors and oak spice. The Petite Sirah was fermented in small open tops and hand plunged every day until extraction was perfect prior to gently pressing. The wine was aged in separate lots with the final cuvée assembled from individual barrel selection, totaling 61% new oak after 20 months in barrel and bottled in July 2020.
