2017 Viognier Santa Barbara County

Our Bridlewood Santa Barbara County Reserve Viognier has a light straw color with a lively pale green tinge. Bright aromas of jasmine, citrus blossom and honeysuckle arise from the glass for a floral bouquet and palate that is further accentuated by notes of apricot pie and vanilla cream. Our Reserve Viognier is crisp and refreshing, and pairs perfectly with fresh and spicy cuisines such as Thai or Vietnamese. It’s also the perfect summer wine to enjoy with grilled seafood, farmers market salads and outdoor patio dining.

The fruit for our Reserve Viognier was grown in the Santa Ynez Valley at a site just around the corner from our winery known for producing exceptional fruit with great character. The 2017 harvest in California was early and light, beginning with abundant winter rainfall that replenished soils followed by a wet and mild spring. The harvest advanced steadily for most of the season until the heat that started in late August progressed the pace. Cooling temperatures in September allowed the crops to ripen evenly and helped the grapes develop rich flavors. Wines produced this year have beautiful aromatics, excellent structure and great intensity of flavor.

Wine Tips:

2017 was a mild year that provided ample time for us to optimize the pick date of this Viognier. We patiently waited until flavors had fully developed and harvested around 26 brix. We picked early in the morning, and immediately whole-cluster pressed the cool fruit using a champagne press cycle to gently liberate the juice. The clear juice was racked to a combination of new barriques and stainless-steel tanks. The wines were racked to tank early in the year with further élevage taking place in stainless steel to retain the florals and perfume we love in this wine. As always, we selected the best lots and blended them to create a seamless, easy to enjoy, bright Viognier to enjoy all spring and summer.
