2017 Block 5 Syrah Santa Ynez Valley

We harvested 90% of this Syrah from the hillside and south-facing Block 5. This aspect and hillside gradient meant these grapes were afforded intense sunshine and cool evening temperatures perfect for Syrah. We also harvested 10% Petite Sirah from Block 3 and 11 to add extra dimension to the wine. The 2017 growing season experienced winter rain followed by a warm spring. Higher temperatures in late summer hastened the start of harvest. Although yields were lighter and fruit clusters smaller, the berries showed deeply concentrated flavor.

In mid-October, Block 5 was handpicked in the cool of dawn. It was then judiciously sorted to ensure only the most perfect berries remained in the two open-top tanks. After 5 days of cold soaking to gently extract color and flavor, the tanks were inoculated. Fermentation lasted for 15 days. After pressing, the wine was racked to French and American oak barrels from select coopers to achieve complex flavors and oak spice. The Petite Sirah was fermented in small open tops and hand plunged every day until extraction was perfect prior to gently pressing. The wine was aged in separate lots with the final cuvée assembled from individual barrel selection, totaling 50% new oak after 20 months in barrel and bottled in August 2019.

Wine Tips:

Our Block 5 Syrah is deliciously distinctive with rich and intense flavor. This opulent wine features flavors of black cherry, strawberries, star anise, caramelized figs and spice. Block 5 Syrah will continue to improve with age and careful cellaring. Enjoy this wine with red meat dishes, such as braised venison or osso buco for a classic pairing.
