2017 Reserve Viognier Santa Barbara County

Our Bridlewood Santa Barbara County Reserve Viognier has a lovely golden color with a pale green tinge that is both vibrant and alluring. Delightfully intense aromas of fresh pear, apricot and white blossom arise from the glass for a rich bouquet. This Viognier is creamy and smooth on the palate with an immediate mouth-filling texture and offers flavors of lemon gelato, orange blossom, and dried apricot. Our Reserve Viognier is brightly aromatic and refreshing, and pairs well with a variety of seafood, grilled chicken, veal, and pork, or an amazing cheese board.

All of the fruit for our Reserve Viognier was grown in the Santa Ynez Valley at a site just around the corner from our winery known for producing exceptional fruit with great character. The 2016 harvest in California was early with a yield of exceptional quality fruit throughout the state. The season included an early spring and summer, with cool nights and warm days in July and August that allowed crops to mature well. The fruit had excellent color and intensity, and wines produced this year have excellent balance.

2016 was a mild year that led to a late pick of our Viognier. We waited until flavors had fully developed and harvested around 28 brix. We picked early in the morning, and immediately whole-bunch pressed the cool fruit to avoid any bitterness from the skins. The clear juice was racked to a combination of old French oak barriques, one new American oak barrel, stainless steel drums, and concrete eggs for fermentation in our underground cellar. After 5 months in barrel, we selected the best lots and blended them to create a seamless, easy drinking, bright Viognier to enjoy all spring and summer.
